Zhang Jike, the "Tibetan Mastiff," is one of only four male players in history to complete the table tennis Grand Slam (World Cup, World Championships, Olympic singles gold). He did it faster than anyone: from his first World Cup win in November 2011 to his Olympic gold at London 2012, just 445 days elapsed. That record still stands.

Now 38 and years removed from WTT sanctioned events, Zhang stepped back onto the competitive stage on June 26 at the Hangzhou Lin'an Sports and Culture Expo Center. The vehicle for his return was a format he created himself: a 5v5 team "100-point battle" inspired by basketball streetball rules, livestreamed on Douyin.

How It Works

No games, no time limit. First team to 100 cumulative points wins. The scoring team keeps serving, removing the usual safety valve of switching serve every two points. Water breaks only at 20, 40, 60, and 80 points. If tied at 99-99, a team must win by 2. Disciplines switch at each 15-point threshold: singles, singles, singles, singles, men's doubles, women's singles, mixed doubles. Both captains must remain on court for the entire match.

Match Progression

Segment 1 (0-15, singles): Cheng Jingqi defeated Zhang Jike 15-12.
Score: Team Ovtcharov 15, Team Zhang 12. Zhang started strong with reverse short serves and forehand loops to lead 2-0, but Cheng's sharp backhand angles and familiarity with Zhang's patterns turned the tide. Two missed backhand flips at 12-12 and a net cord on match point sealed Zhang's loss.

Segment 2 (15-30, singles): Zhao Zihao defeated Liu Jialiang 30-23.
Score: Team Ovtcharov 30, Team Zhang 23. Extended shakehand loop rallies. Liu's power kept him in points, but Zhao's faster close-to-table speed and superior short game gave him the edge.

Segment 3 (30-45, singles, captain vs captain): Ovtcharov defeated Zhang Jike 15-11.
Score: Team Ovtcharov 45, Team Zhang 34. The crowd erupted for the marquee matchup. Ovtcharov's backhand banana flip was as sharp as ever, pinning Zhang to his backhand corner. Zhang's forehand, once the most feared weapon in the sport, landed long on several high-percentage opportunities.

Segment 4 (45-60, singles): Cheng Jingqi defeated Yin Hang 60-52.
Score: Team Ovtcharov 60, Team Zhang 52. Yin's chopping style troubled Cheng early, drawing unexpected errors. But Cheng adjusted mid-segment, mixing high lobs with sudden smashes to force Yin into mistakes.

Segment 5 (60-75, men's doubles): Ovtcharov/Zhao Zihao defeated Zhang/Liu Jialiang 13-15.
Score: Team Ovtcharov 75, Team Zhang 65. Zhang's movement was noticeably slower. After stretching to save a ball, he paused to rub his lower back, waving off water. Zhang/Liu lost the doubles segment 13-15.

Segment 6 (75-90, women's singles): Li Rensijia defeated Liang Jiayi 11-15.
Score: Team Ovtcharov 90, Team Zhang 76. Liang brought aggressive energy, but her lack of high-level experience showed against Li's sharp angle changes. The lead grew to 14 points.

Segment 7 (90-100, mixed doubles): Zhang/Liang Jiayi won 12-10. Final score: Team Ovtcharov 100-88.
Score: Team Ovtcharov 100, Team Zhang 88. Before the final segment, Zhang pulled a 2012 London Olympic podium photo from his pocket, showing himself on the top step and Ovtcharov on the bronze step. Ovtcharov laughed and held it up to the crowd. Zhang shifted into high gear, serving fast long balls to catch Ovtcharov off guard, while Liang added sharp net play. They won the segment 12-10, but the early deficit was too large.

Controversy: Cao Wei's Withdrawal

Former national team player Cao Wei withdrew on the day of the match after a dispute over format. He had agreed to participate on the condition of a singles match against Zhang Jike, but was informed upon arrival on June 24 that his slot had been changed to doubles. After failing to reach a resolution, he left Hangzhou.

What's Next

In a post-match interview, Zhang teased that he has already sent invitations to other retired stars for future editions, naming Timo Boll and Ma Lin as potential guests. The event drew over 500 million total views on Douyin, suggesting the format may have legs beyond this single exhibition.

Beyond the match itself, Zhang has been building a broader table tennis infrastructure. In May 2025, he opened a 4,000+ m² training facility in Hangzhou Lin'an with 36 ITTF certified tables. In July 2025, he launched the "Zhang Jike Cup", China's first nationwide amateur tournament named after an active player.
